A Celebration of Black Women Founders at the NY Tech Meetup

EisnerAmper has been a proud supporter of the NY Tech Alliance for many years. The Alliance is a non-profit organization that strives to make the NY tech community and beyond a diverse, dynamic and inclusive industry. Last November, it held a virtual event, “A Celebration of Black Women Founders,” hosted by Andy Saldaña, Executive Director of the NY Tech Alliance, and Georgie-Ann Getton-Mckoy, founder of GSD with Georgie. The program featured six black female founders who are creating phenomenal technological advancements. Each of the women provided viewers with a demo of the business model she founded. The topics varied widely and covered everything from marketing to politics to voting.

These black women are building valuable products and businesses with scalable market opportunities. The largest industries for black female tech founders include education, and financial and health tech, to name a few. Georgie shared several important statistics from a Face of the Founder report by Black Women Talk Tech that surveyed 671 self-identifying black women tech founders. The report found 70% of black women tech founders are solo founders, 60% are likely to purchase goods and services from other black-owned businesses, and 18% of respondents secured average funding of $36,000 from their friends and family.

Below is a brief description of the impressive six founders and their companies:

• Georgie-Ann Getton-Mckoy – Founder of GSD with Georgie
  • Georgie is a powerhouse in the New York tech industry. GSD (Get Stuff Done) is a digital brand that teaches dreamers how to rise up and become doers and how to thrive by creating digital products and services.
• Ivy Too – Founder of Urbinite
  • Urbinite is an app where Meetup meets BumbleBFF. The app was created for recent college graduates to help alleviate the overwhelming stressors that come with moving to a big city to start their first full-time job. Urbinite’s vision is to enrich the lives of people worldwide through meaningful connections.
• Colette Ellis – Founder of StartWithin
  • Libbie is a user-friendly, mental health chatbot that is designed to provide relief from anxiety and, in the process, is disrupting the $5 billion global behavioral health market. Libbie uses EFT-Tapping, where someone can tap on meridian points and speak about what is bothering them through this accessible, culturally-responsive, evidence-based, intuitive chatbot.
• Wen-Kuni Céant – CEO and Co-Founder of Politicking
  • Politicking is a social and political mobile platform that allows users to get to know their elected officials and others running for office on the local, state and federal level. The platform also helps demystify amendments and referendums. Politicking helps people to understand the importance of being part of a democracy and makes sure that their voice is heard.
• Natasha Green – Founder of WeIntervene
  • WeIntervene allows school counselors to share academic and social opportunities with students and guardians via an online platform. The education management platform keeps track of both non-academic and academic data points and allows school communities to track and manage family engagement.
• Jannae Gammage – CEO and Co-Founder of The Market Base
  • Market Base helps entrepreneurs, product creators and small businesses achieve more with unlimited expert marketing support via an easy-to-use online platform that pairs someone with a professional marketing team that supports on-demand strategy.
