Jim Malone is the Managing Director in the firm's State and Local Tax (SALT) practice, focusing on indirect (sales and use) tax. With more than 30 years of experience, Jim specializes in forensic tax recovery; and has deep understanding of the ever-changing tax laws. He is a recognized leader in the field with extensive experience in multi-state sales tax refunds audits, compliance reviews, audit defense, training, and research, Jim has successfully served clients across diverse industries, including healthcare, hospitality, sports entertainment, financial institutions, retail, and manufacturing.

In his current role, Jim leverages his expertise to guide clients through complex tax regulations and secure substantial financial benefits for his clients. His comprehensive knowledge of sales and use tax has enabled him to identify and recover over $300 million in refund claims throughout his career. Jim’s expertise extends to significant judicial level sales/use tax cases, including a $15 million PA Supreme Court decision regarding airport runways exemption, a $2 million Alabama administrative law judge decision exempting CO2 used in poultry processing, a PA Commonwealth Court settlement awarding $1 million in refunds to MRI owners, and a $250 million Nevada Supreme Court decision regarding the exemption of complimentary and employee meals.

Prior to joining the firm, Jim co-founded FM Cost Containment, a national cost containment firm that provided specialized consulting services in sales and use tax, real estate tax, and cost segregation. Before this role, Jim served as Director of Sales Tax for a national financial advisory firm for nearly 17 years.
